"Al haberme escrito un editor alemán para pedirme un relato del desarrollo de mi mente y carácter, junto con un esbozo de mi autobiografía, he pensado que la empresa me divertiría y podría interesar a mis hijos o nietos. Sé que a mí me habría interesado mucho haber leído un bosquejo, aunque fuera breve y aburrido, de la mente de mi abuelo escrito por él mismo, y de lo que pensaba e hizo y de cómo trabajaba. He tratado de escribir el siguiente relato sobre mí mismo como si fuera un muerto en el otro mundo que recapitulara su vida. Esto no me ha resultado difícil, porque mi vida pronto tocará a su fin, ni tampoco me he preocupado por cuestiones de estilo.

Nací en Shrewsbury el 12 de febrero de 1809. He oído decir a mi padre que él creía que las personas con mentes privilegiadas por lo general tienen recuerdos que se remontan a una época muy temprana de su vida. No es mi caso, porque mi primer recuerdo se remonta únicamente a cuando yo tenía cuatro años y unos pocos meses, cuando fuimos a bañarnos en el mar cerca de Abergele".
