Cuando el veneciano Marco Polo em­prendió a finales del siglo XIII el viaje más fascinante que se haya realizado jamás, era muy poco lo que en Occidente se sabía de Asia. En compañía de su padre Nicolò y su tío Maffeo, Marco Polo recorrió miles de kilómetros por escarpadas sendas y ásperos desiertos, a lo largo de los cuales los viajeros hubieron de enfrentarse a bandidos que los asaltaron y a voces fantasmales que pretendían extraviarlos para acabar con sus vidas. Tras llegar a la corte del Gran Kan, Marco Polo se puso al servicio "del hombre más poderoso del mundo" y tuvo la oportunidad de conocer buena parte de China, un país que lo deslumbró por la abundancia de sus riquezas, sus pintorescos hábitos y los hombres y animales prodigiosos que habitaban algunas de sus regiones. Cuando Marco Polo regresó a Venecia tras veinticinco años de ausencia, sus compatriotas apenas daban crédito a tantas maravillas como les describió: "Pues no he contado ni la mitad de las cosas extraordinarias de las que he sido testigo", se dice que afirmó. El relato de Marco Polo se complementa en este volumen con una somera descripción de la China de Kublai Kan y un meditado comentario sobre la verosimilitud de las abundantes maravillas que contiene el libro del viajero más famoso de todos los tiempos.
